This is my second time reading this book, and this time, the kids read it with me as part of our school curriculum. I love exposing them to different perspectives on life, and this one is so far removed from anything they know.
It has sparked some really meaningful discussions about what it means to be human: what's common versus what's acceptable. We've talked a lot about boundaries and where forgiveness fits in.
The first time I read this book, I felt the same way they do: that this way of life was unforgivable. But now I can better appreciate how Walls' resilience allowed her to endure it all, both as a child and as an adult.
I really admire the way the author loves her family despite everything they have gone through. She shows so much grace toward her parents and doesn't let their struggles define her. It's an incredible story and journey, and I'm glad I read it again.
